Description

LISE GERVAISA PAIR OF DRAWINGS: ÉTUDES POUR LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPSwatercolour, ink and ballpoint pen drawingseach signed and dated '58 Each 10 ins x 8 ins; 25.4 cms x 20.3 cms Provenance:Galerie John A. Schweitzer, MontrealNote:Often hailed by the Quebec press as a forgotten artist, the works of Lise Gervais are ripe with the influence of Paul-Émile Borduas and the Automatistes. Gervais studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal under Stanley Cosgrove. She herself later went on to teach at several prominent Montreal schools. In her later years, she abandoned city life and sought solitude in the woods of Laurentides, Quebec.Gervais' Études pour le sacre du Printemps (or, Studies for the Rite of Spring) are as pithy and as charged as their namesake by Igor Stravinsky. The sensation stirred is avant-garde: fiery colours and stark black outlines, compose figures reminiscent of anatomical renderings of human musculature. Initially eerie, their body language becomes inviting. They are positioned to dance, they are poised to embrace. Estimate: $900-1,200
