The paintings of Liu Liguo suggest the most striking characteristic
of daily life in contemporary China——gaudiness.
The flashy decoration symbolizes the pop aesthetic standards
set after China''s reform and opening up broke away
from its traditional system, and a vulgar taste in which the
common people find spiritual comfort when their life
injected with politics and ideology is reverted to earthly
life. I feel that this taste may contain positive force for Chinese
ordinary people, or factors such as confidence in life
which plays important role in how Chinese people fill their
daily emptiness, and particularly in how Chinese people
reconstruct social order when there is a lack of moral,
emotion and anchorage since the opening up. This is, of
course, only a direction for social research. Yet, undoubtedly,
it pioneers a new route which is tragic but must be
explored for Chinese contemporary art.
