Item Overview

Description

LOMONOSOV, Mikhail Vasil'evich (1711-1765). Kratkoi Rossiiskoi Letopisets s Rodosloviem. [A Short Chronicle of Russia with a Genealogy]. St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, 1760.

8° (164 x 111mm). Engraved head- and tail-pieces and engraved vignettes throughout. (Light browning, some light staining.) Near contemporary marbled boards (spine chipped and with old repair, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Sergei Aleksandrovich Rinkevich (stamp).

FIRST EDITION of a work originally written as a textbook for the Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, composed by Lomonosov at the same time as his Ancient Russian History. It includes a chronological list of princes and rulers from Riurik to Peter the Great, with a supplement by A.I. Bogdanov, librarian of the Academy of Sciences. Lomonosov began his historical researches in 1753, after Elizabeth I had expressed an interest in reading Russian history written 'in the style' of Lomonosov, and indeed demand for a work such as this Chronicle was so great that it was reprinted twice by 1761; the second and third editions, however, differ slightly from this first. Katalog Russkago Otdela 149; Kilgour 658; SK 3740; Smirnov-Sokol'skii Moia Biblioteka vol. 1, p.99; Sopikov 6013.
