Item Overview

Description

Copper-engraved map, 800 x 570 mm. Small repairs to lower blank margin, some creasing around center fold.

VERY RARE SPANISH MARITIME CHART OF FLORIDA, LOUISIANA, AND PARTS OF TEXAS AS WELL AS THE CARIBBEAN, COLOMBIA, AND VENEZUELA. First edition of López's maritime map of Caribbean coastlines during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). López's interests extend north to the Spanish colony of Florida (ceded to Britain in 1763) and Louisiana, which would become a Spanish territory in 1762. As expected for a sea-chart, great detail is given to coastlines, and Florida is drawn as a series of closely associated islands. The cartouche displays the agricultural bounties of the New World, with a laurel wreath and sword on the left symbolizing the colonists' victory over the indigenous populations, a crown of feathers and a bow and quiver on the right. The cartography is based on d'Anville's maps of the region. Phillips 685.
