Description

TRAVELLING NAPURRURLA NAKAMARRA with artists name, date and Alcaston House Gallery number '1997/AK3866' (on the reverse) synthetic polymer paint on canvas 179.6 x 183 cm This painting is to be sold with photographs of the artist painting this work and certificate of authenticity from Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne PROVENANCE Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne Acquired from the above by the present owner in 1999 LITERATURE Fourth National Indigenous Heritage Art Award, 1998 catalogue, illus. EXHIBITION Canberra, Fourth National Indigenous Heritage Art Award, 1998 NOTES "This work represents the Jukurrpa (Dreaming), associated with gaining the knowledge and powers of the ancestors who govern the land (universe). In the Dreamtime the wild bush potato 'always comes back' in the desert, providing food and nourishment. Spotting the cracks in the hard red earth, the women dig with their small coolman, then cook them on the hot coals of the campfires. The body paint designs associated with fertility and procreation, together with the desert life force of rain drops, seeds, intricate underground water sources and the bush yam are ever present in the artist's work and lavishly embellish this work. The Travelling Naparrurla and Nakamarra is depicted by the two outer deep crimson circles and their camp fires, hunting grounds north of Yuendumu, near the Granites area of the NT" ( Fourth National Indigenous Heritage Art Award, unpaginated).
