LOU BERNSTEIN (American, 1911-2005) Boys in the Park, 1949 Vintage gelatin silver, 1949 10-1/4 x 13-3/8 inches (26.0 x 34.0 cm) Recto: signed in ink in artist's hand Verso: signed and dated in ink in artist's hand State: flush mounted with blackened edges Cornell Capa, Founder and Executive Director of The International Center of Photography, New York, acquired 73 photographs by Lou Bernstein for its permanent collection in 1991. The complete collection was exhibited at ICP, NY, from February 21, 1992 until April 26, 1992 and was titled Lou Bernstein, Five Decades of Photography. This print is 1 of 4 extant copies, one of which was part of the 73 acquired from Lou Bernstein's private collection. Bernstein was a charter member of the Photo League in New York and was active in the organization from 1936 until the league disbanded in the early 1950s. Bernstein taught at the Phoenix School of Design in New York and at the request of W. Eugene Smith, took over Smith's classes at Cooper Union while Smith went to Japan to photograph for Life magazine. Bernstein was known as "the photographer's photographer" by his colleagues and was active for more than sixty years. His work was included in Edward Steichen's ground-breaking "Family of Man" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1955 and is found in numerous museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the International Center of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and The Jewish Museum.
