Description

Louis Desvignes (French, active 1907-aft. 1931) "Va Fils", 1916, and "Hommages aux Morts," ca. 1920, two World War I commemorative medals, the first with an obverse depicting a female figure allegorical of La Patrie embracing her son and handing him a sword, with title legend and blank inset die, the reverse with a flag-draped tomb before an oak tree and flanked by laurel branches, with the legend "Patria" and blank inset die, dia. 1-15/16", and the second of cenotaph form, the obverse depicting a mournful Marianne placing a rose on the body of a soldier fallen in battle, with title legend, the reverse with a flag, laurel branches and blank inset die, with the legend "Gloire a notre France Immortelle! Gloire a ceux qui sont Morts pour Elle! - V[ictor] H[ugo]", h. 2-1/2", w. 2-1/8", each marked on the lower edge "Bronze" and with the French cornucopia mint-mark in use after 1880.
