NOTE

The attribution to Luca Ferrari has been endorsed on the basis of photographs by Prof. Massimo Pirondini, to whom we are grateful. Prof. Pirondini dates the painting to circa 1650-52, after the artist's return to Padua and after his frescoes for the Villa Selvatico Emo-Capodilista in Battaglia Terme. This painting may be compared to Ferrari's two paintings of female heroines also datable to around this time; Judith in a private collection, Modena, and Salome belonging to the Credito Emiliano, Reggio Emilia (M. Pirondini, Luca Ferrari, Reggio Emilia 1999, p. 177, cat. nos. 79 and 80, reproduced in colour plates LXIII and LXIV respectively).
