*Lucas (Richard Cockle, 1800-83). A disbound album of ninety-nine window mounted albumen print cartes de visite, c, 1860s, including thirty-four self portraits, many staged and including titles such as He Resolves on Adventure, He Goes on His Travels, As a Hopeful Lover, A Disappointed One, The Poet of Hope, The Conspirator, The Spirit of Wine, The Repentent-The Spirit of Intellect, As a Saint, A Sinner, A Druid in Private, The Old Artful in Public, As a Student, A Don, A Jesuit, A Puritan, etc., the remaining cartes of sculptures and designs, etc., some images faded, neat ink manuscript captions to mounts, somewhat spotted and soiled throughout and frayed at front and rear, four other small albumen prints mounted on rear endpapers, partially indistinct and damaged inscription at front giving provenance and dated ' Chilworth, Hants, 1863' with another date below May Day 1861, disbound and spine deficient, oblong 8vo, together with an autograph letter signed by Lucas, Chilworth Gallery, 22nd September 1863, to an unidentified man, ' I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your cheque being payment for my book. In early life Man desires Love - in Latter periods - appreciation - this you have given me and to my great Satisfaction. When a stray bit comes across me I will send it you as a memento that you are yrs are remembered by yrs obligingly. The last photograph in your book the Setting Sun [found on rear endpaper with signed presentation inscription from Lucas beneath] - has meaning which you are to dwell on', a little soiled, 2 pp., 8vo. The inscriptions in the album are all apparently in Lucas's holograph. Rare and one of only two presentation albums known to exist, the other belonging to the National Portrait Gallery, London. (2)
