Probably by descent to Carlton Atkin;
By whom given to his wife;
Thence by direct family descent to her grandson the present owner.

NOTE

We are grateful to Dr. Alexander Wied for endorsing the attribution to Lucas van Valkenborch on the basis of a transparency.

A much larger version of this composition was sold Zurich, Koller, 24 March 1994, lot 37 as by Valckenborch, but Dr. Wied now believes it to be from the workshop, and the present work Valckenborch's original.
