477. CARL LUDWIG (1816-1895) German physician and physiologist, invented devices to record arterial blood-pressure changes, measure blood flow, and separate gases from blood (which established their role in blood purification). He was the first to keep animal organs alive outside the body and determined that the kidneys played a role in filtering blood. Scarce A.L.S. "C. Ludwig", 2pp. 8vo., Liepzig, July 21, 1894, in German. Untranslated, but with a mention of philosophy within the text.
