Like no other German artist Konrad Lueg abandoned his personal style at the beginning of the 1960s. Inspired by American Pop Art, above all by Lichtenstein and Hamilton, Lueg - later working as gallery owner Konrad Fischer - founded the 'Kapitalistische Realismus' together with Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter and Manfred Kuttner. In 1962, Konrad Lueg used casein paint, "a water-soluable colouring which is usable in school and decoration giving his paintings a simple, nearly childlike character, because the opaque paint
available in various colourful shades dries quickly, neither allowing fine scumbles nor depth. His new paintings showed at first silhouettesque body parts, then idols in the style of woodcuts, sportsmen as blotches of colour, his own uncle and aunt as tapestries and finally decoration patterns available in trade. Living with Pop was not a kind of party to start with that resulted in the creation of happy pictures, but more a kind of trial inflicted by fate referring to German every day life in a serial and systematical way." (Cited and translated from: Thomas Kellein, Leben mit Pop, Ich nenne mich als Maler Konrad Lueg, Bielefeld, 1999, p.23).
