FIVE VIEWS OF PEASANTS IN TRADITIONAL SOUTH ITALIAN COSTUME: FESTA DELLA MADONNA DI PIEDGROTTA IN NAPOLI, MOLO PICOLO; RITORNO DELLA FESTA DI MONTOVERGINE, PROVINCIA PRINCIPATO ULTRA; FESTA DI SAN BRUNI IN SERRA NELLA PROVINCIA DI COSENZA, CALABRIA CITRA; COSTUMI ALBANESI DEL RISTRETTO (SIC) DI CASTROVILLARI NELLA PROVINCIA DI COSENZA, CALABRIA CITRA; AND COSTUMI DELLA PROVINCIA DI CAPITANATA, FIERA DI FOGGIA

Presumably purchased on the Grand Tour by George Byng Esq. M.P. (d.1847) and by descent.

Notes

A watercolour from the same series as the present lot showing costumes from Principato Ultra is in the Museo Nazionale delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari, Rome (M.C. Masdea and A. Caròla-Perrotti, Costumi popolari del Regno di Napoli delle Collezioni Borboniche e Lorenesi, Naples, 1991, p. 201). Another watercolour of the fifth scene in this group, signed and dated '1812', is in the Società Napoletana di Storia Patria, Naples (M. Causa Picone, Disegni della Società Napoletana di Storia Patria, Naples, 1974, no. 246).
