Notes

This sensitive depiction of a young girl with a dove is typical of many works by Pampaloni, of which plasters survive in the gipsoteca bartoliniana- pampaloniana in Florence, his native city. He studied under Bartolini and executed many civic commissions celebrating Italian nationhood prior to unification, for example statues of Brunelleschi and Leonardo da Vinci. Although not intended as a pendant, the Kneeling girl with dove complements Pampaloni's Kneeling boy (known as L'Orfano) which was commissioned by the Polish noblewoman Anna Potocki. The innocence and sentimentality of the work is rivalled by the technical mastery of the surface finishes.
