Item Overview

Description

LUTHER, Martin (1483-1546). Ein gar schon nutzlich büchlin ... von den gelübden der klosterlüten, translated from Latin into German by Leo Jud (1482-1542). Zurich: [Christoph Froschauer, c. 1523].

4° (206 x 149mm). With final blank leaf, gothic type, woodcut title vignette of Christ carrying the cross, woodcut historiated initials. CONTEMPORARY ?SWISS WALLET BINDING, calf over thin pasteboard, front cover and flap with central panel of vertical rolls, floral roll frame and on front edge, back cover with panel of intersecting blind fillets, brass bar and catch on front (a few small wormholes and one small chip at edge); modern blue half-morocco slipcase.

Third edition in German, the first translated by the Zurich reformer, Leo Jud, of Luther's revolutionary tract stripping the monastic life of its scriptural basis. First printed in 1521, De votis monasticis iudicium (On the monastic vows) sparked the dissolution of many monasteries across Europe. In Zurich in 1523 (the year and place of the Jud edition), the city allowed nuns to marry, dissolved all monasteries in its province and used the money for the poor and for education. Basel and Geneva followed suit by the end of the decade.

Apart from a few unobtrusive wormholes, THE CONTEMPORARY WALLET BINDING IS IN VERY FINE CONDITION. Benzing 1013.
