The attribution to Maffeo Verona is based upon a painting signed with the artist's initials, representing Nine Female Nudes in a Landscape, which was sold Monaco, Sotheby's, 23 June 1985, lot 118, erroneously attributed to Marco Angolo del Moro, but which has since been correctly restored to the oeuvre of Maffeo Verona by Luisa Vertova (see L. Vertova, 'A signed Maffeo Verona' in The Burlington Magazine, December 1986, vol. CXVIII, no. 1005, p. 892, reproduced, as whereabouts unknown). Both paintings are of similar dimensions and share the same handling, figure types and distinctive treatment to the foliage.
