Manu Parekh first visited Benares in 1979 searching for an appropriate landscape that could encapsulate the Indian psyche. He has re-visited the city numerous times in actuality and in imagination. Noticing the central role of flowers in marking occasions and rituals associated with life and death, Parekh has in effect created large scale portraits of the flowers. Subverting notions of traditional landscape through his focus on this microcosmic detail, Parekh also conveys its life-giving energy shakti from the inherent sexuality in its form.
