Notes

Marguerite Arosa, French landscape and portrait artist, worked in Paris during the second half of the nineteenth century. A pupil of Mayer, Barrias and Armand-Gautier, her work was exhibited at the Salon from 1882 to 1900. Her father Gustave Arosa, an art photographer, tutored Paul Gauguin after the death of his mother. Marguerite encouraged Gauguin to paint his first landscapes, while her uncle Achille can be credited with sparking his interest in Tahiti after recounting his own trip to the Caribbean.
