Description

Maria Spilsbury (Taylor) (1777-c.1823) Mrs. Tighe, seated in the drawing room at Rossana beneath the bust of herself by Bartolini, with two of her grandchildren Oil on canvas, 44 x 35cm Sara Tighe was the daughter of Sir William Fownes and Elizabeth Ponsonby, and brought Woodstock into the Tighe family. Her devotion to Wesley and his fundamentalism, influenced her ideas on education. The bust by Bartolini and that of her husband are in a private collection, Co. Wicklow A version of this picture, was sold by James Adam and is illustrated in Kirwan, Reminiscences of Marianne-Caroline Hamilton (1777-1861).
