Description

MARIE-EDOUARD ADAM (FRENCH 1847-1929). THE AMERICAN BARK "ST. KATHERINE" IN STORMY SEAS. Built at Bath, Maine in 1890, by John McDonald for Flint & Co., the "St. Katherine" won a $1,000 purse by beating the fully-rigged ships "W.F. Babcock" and "I.F. Chapman" in a race from the Hawaiian Islands to Delaware Breakwater. Oil on canvas, 24 1/2x 36 1/4 inches. Signed and dated "Ed. Adam 1894/ Havre, France" l.r.
