Lot 92: Mariotto Albertinelli (Florence 1474-1515)

The Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist oil on panel 47 x 37 7/8 in. (119.3 x 96.2 cm.) NOTES We are indebted to Everett Fahy who, on the basis of photographs, pointed out that this previously unpublished panel is a work by Albertinelli, executed in the two years between the dissolution of his compagnia with Fra Bartolommeo, 5 January 1513, and his death in 1515. He notes Albertinelli's debt to Fra Bartolommeo's unfinished Pala del Gran Consiglia (1510-3) and compares it with Albertinelli's Volognano altarpiece of 1514, recording two autograph variants of the present composition, one in the Sedelmeyer sale, Paris, June 1907, lot 85, the other with two additional angels, sold, Sotheby's, London, 8 July 1992, lot 267.
