Description

MARJORIE (JORI) ELIZABETH THURSTON SMITHAJACCIO, CORSICAoil on boardsigned (twice); signed and titled on the reverse 4.5 ins x 6.25 ins; 11.4 cms x 15.9 cms Provenance:Private Collection, MontrealNote:Jori Smith studied under Randolph Hewton at the Art Association of Montreal. In 1930, she married fellow artist Jean Palardy, whom she painted with extensively in the Charlevoix region. The only woman in the Canadian artists collective called the Eastern Group of Painters (which included John Lyman, Goodridge Roberts and Eric Goldberg among others), Smith was lauded for her ability to capture the personalities and moods of the people and places that she painted. Smith embarked on many working trips to Europe beginning in 1934. This work depicts the French commune, Ajaccio, the largest settlement on the island of Corsica and the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Smith's quick brushstrokes and limited palette denote the heat of the day - the lush, green palms offering places of cool refuge. Estimate: $700-900
