Notes

The design dated 1568, made for court procurator Marcus Esslinger, must be by the relatively little known Martin Lang, who was the brother of Daniel (see lot 10 above). It also reflects motifs derived from the work of Tobias Stimmer. The second, anonymous drawing contains the arms of Bernhardin Peyer im Hof, who died in 1582 and Agatha Unmuth from Überlingen, who died in 1596. It relates directly to the couple's tomb, preserved in the cloister of the Church of Allerheiligen in Schaffhausen. The monument was already being planned in 1582, but on stylistic grounds, the design must, however, date from the later 1590s. The tomb was sculpted by the stonemason Hans Windler, but the author of the design remains uncertain. It could perhaps be by either Daniel or Hans Caspar Lang. As a design for a sculptural work of the late 16th Century, it is a rarity.
