Description

Mary A Hall, late 19th century/early 20th century 'Liverpool Anglican Cathedral under construction', watercolour, signed with initials, inscribed and dated August 1927 on label on reverse, 29.5cm x 50.5cm Liverpool Cathedral was designed by George Gilbert Scott in the Gothic Revival style. The foundation stone was laid by King Edward VII in 1904. This watercolour depicts the Cathedral prior to the construction of the massive 101 metre high bell tower which was completed in 1942. Liverpool Cathedral is the largest in Europe. Building was finally completed in 1978, some 74 years after the initial stone was laid.
