Item Overview

Description

Mary Cottenham Yeats (nee White) (circa 1869-1947) AN ELEGANT COUPLE and A LADY IN BLUE BONNET (PAIR OF CHRISTMAS CARDS) each signed in monogram lower left watercolour stencil on card 14 by 11cm., 5.5 by 4 25in. The second work measures 5.5 by 3.5 inches. The wife of Jack Butler Yeats, 'Cottie' Yeats studied at the Chiswick School of Art in London before her marriage in 1894 and subsequent move to Dublin. In 1903 she became involved with the Dun Emer Guild, designing banners for the Loughrea Cathedral commission. She later joined the Guild of Irish Art-Workers, along with her husband, and contributed further designs for embroidered banners. The Cuala Press also published some of her illustrations. The present pair of stencils are interesting in that they demonstrate an interest in this technique shared by her husband (see lots 123 and 124).
