Coleman was born in Ft. Worth, Texas and studied at Texas Christian University, and then at the Art Students League in 1915. She returned to Texas to teach before moving to Los Angeles in 1925. In California, she worked with Edgar Payne, Armin Hansen, and Paul Lauritz.
