Description

Mary I Hailwood (R.A) (British 1908 - 1983). An unsigned gouache on board showing a 1920's interior party scene with crowd of dancers, the central couple with the man in black tie and woman in white dress, naively portrayed, 30 by 51cm. ***Biography: Hailwood studied at Leeds College of Art and the Royal College of Art and exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, (a member in 1935) The Salon, Paris and the Bradford and Leeds Museums in the 1920's and 1930's. She produced numerous paintings, drawings and engraving and print works. From as affluent family, her father, Ernest Hailwood was the inventor and producer of the Hailwood & Ackroyd miners lamp. Mary Hailwood is the niece of the renowned illustrator and horse artist William Smithson Broadhead (1888 - 1960), her mother being that artists elder sister.
