Item Overview

Description

MARY SMYTH PERKINS TAYLOR (American, 1875-1931); Hooked rug depicting an equestrian scene, mounted on stretcher, early 20th c.; 58'' x 78''; Note: Born in Philadelphia, Perkins attended the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art) and exhibited at both the Paris Salon and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Later moving to the artist community of Phillips Mill in Bucks County, she began creating hooked rugs based on her paintings during the 1920s. Due to the fragile nature of the materials this rug is one of a small number still in existence today, although a similar example can be seen amongst her other works at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
