Lot 3: MATTHEUS ADOLFSZ. MOLANUS (active Middelburg before 1625-1645)

A wooded landscape with a cavalry skirmish, a city beyond oil on copper 53/4 x 71/2 in. (14.5 x 19 cm.) PROVENANCE with A. de Heuvel, Brussels, 1961, from whom purchased by the father of the present owner. EXHIBITION Amsterdam, Waterman Gallery, Masters of Middelburg, March 1984, no. 72, illustrated. NOTES Mattheus Molanus is first recorded as a member of the Middelburg Guild of Saint Luke in 1625 and the following year he was registered as a painter and a citizen in that city. His name appears regularly in the Guild's archives until his death in 1645, when he was buried at the Oude Kerkhof in Middelburg on 3 April.
