Lot 2: MATTHEUS ADOLFSZ. MOLANUS (active Middleburg before 1625-1645)

A wooded landscape with a cavalry skirmish, a city beyond oil on copper 53/4 x 71/2 in. (14.5 x 19 cm.) PROVENANCE with P. de Boer, Amsterdam, 1983. EXHIBITION Amsterdam, Waterman Gallery, Masters of Middleburg, March 1984, no. 72, illustrated. NOTES Mattheus Molanus is first recorded as a member of the Board of the Middleburg Guild of Saint Luke in 1625 and the following year he was registered as a painter and a citizen there. His name appears regularly in the Guild's archives until his death in 1645, when he was buried at the Oude Kerkhof in Middleburg on 3 April.
