NOTE

In comparison with his elder and more famous brother Josephus Augustus we do not know much about Mattheus Derk Knip. The main source of information is his correspondence with his family in Tilburg from the period 1802-1808, when he was living in Paris, alongside the artist brothers Van Spaendonck. In 1808 he moved to Den Bosch, where he stayed until 1825, when he moved to Vught.

Only a few of Mattheus Derk Knip's gouaches are signed, though information from an old inventory means that a further six works can be attributed to him. This drawing is close in style to those works, notably in the foliage, the figures, and the overall approach to the composition (see De familie Knip. Drie generaties kunstenaars uit Noord-Brabant., exhibition catalogue, Zwolle, Noord-Brabantsmuseum, 1988, pp. 56-68, 139). As here, Mattheus Derk inscribed many of his gouaches with an indication of the location.
