*Matthieu van Plattenberg, called Monsu Montaigne (circa 1608-1660) A STORM ON A ROCKY COAST WITH SHIPS IN DISTRESS with inventory numbers 81 (in white) and 208(in red); with inscription on the relining canvas 'M: Montagnia. P N 81' oil on canvas 50 5/8 by 76 3/4 in. 128.6 by 195cm. It is interesting to note that the present painting belonged to two of the most eminent collectors in art history: Duke Ferdinand Carlo Gonzaga (1650-1708) and Johann Matthias Schulenberg (1661-1747) (see Provenance and Literature below).
