Maud Clayton Palmer was the second wife of Stanhope Forbes, the pair marrying in 1915, following the death of his first wife, Elizabeth Adela Forbes. A former pupil of the art school established by the Forbeses in 1899, Maud Forbes exhibited from 1903-40, including twenty works at the Royal Academy.

The present lot clearly shows the influence of Stanhope Forbes; see for example The short cut across the fields (RA 1921, sold in these rooms 25 March 2003), or The Huckster (1917, sold Phillips 4 December 2001).
