Maurice Codner was a great friend of Sir Alfred Munnings, the two men spending much of their time together. Munnings did his best to encourage Codners' artistic talents, each painting and sketching the other in turn, with Codner himself becoming a respected portrait artist in his own right. They met in 1919 whilst out hunting in Dedham, Codner a tall thin young man who, in the words of Munnings, "never dreamed of painting Chairman of City Companies and Mayor in Robes"
