Item Overview

Description

MAX FLEISCHER (1861-1930)
THE BOGOR PALACE, VIEWED FROM THE BOTANICAL GARDEN (KEBUN RAYA)
Signed and dated 1848 lower right
Oil on canvas
40 by 53.5 cm.; 15 3/4 by 21 in.
Plein-air German painter Max Fleischer is considered one of the most significant European artists to have visited Indonesia. Compared to his contemporaries, Strasser and Israels, Fleischer gained fair recognition as the premier impressionist to have worked in Indonesia and was furthermore author and illustrator of a work on the study of moss and lichen flora in the Bogor Botanical Garden. The present Lot is probably a preliminary study to the large, undated studio painting of very similar subject, (now in the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam, inv.no.15-983) which was exhibited at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900
