Description

Etching with colors of a Paris street scene by Austrian-American artist, Max Pollack (1886-1970). Circa 1920’s. Etching with aquatint on cream paper. Signed by the artist in pencil, lower right margin. Titled in pencil, lower left margin “Paris, Flowerstand”. Numbered in pencil, center in the bottom margin “36/250”. Classic Parisian French scene and a early rare image by Max Pollack. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston Estate. Max Pollak (1886-1970). Painter and printmaker, was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1886. His family moved to Vienna when he was six months old. He was raised in Vienna and, in 1902, at sixteen years of age he entered the Vienna Academy of Art. He studied painting and printmaking under William Unger and Ferdinand Schmutzer. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1927, living for a time on the East Coast where he traveled about and produced an amazing series of color aquatints of New York, Cincinnati, and Detroit. His first exhibition was at the 57th Street Art Gallery in New York. In 1938, Pollak and his wife, Friedl, moved to San Francisco, California. Max Pollak died in Sausalito, California in 1970. Exhibitions: Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939; California Palace of the Legion of Honor, 1940; Triton Museum in Santa Clara, 1973. Member of the Chicago Society of Etchers and the California Society of Etchers. Works held: Oakland Museum of California Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; New York Public Library; Smithsonian American Art Museum; the de Young Memorial Museum, SF; the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts; British Museum, London.
