Description

Mel Fowler (American, 1921-1987) "Confrontation", an Italian Rosso Levanto marble sculpture, 1983, edition 1/1, signed "Mel 83", mounted on an oval variegated black marble base bearing brass title plaque, overall h. 14-1/2", w. 17", d. 12". Exhibited: International Art Museum, McAllen, Texas one-man exhibition, March 29, 1983 through April 24, 1983. Provenance: The estates of David and Eula Wintermann. Accompanied by the original bill of sale from Mel Fowler, dated April 30, 1984. Mel Fowler, an internationally renowned sculptor, maintained studios in Pomezzana, Italy and Liberty Hill, Texas. His delicate, complex sculptures were created in many themes, including ancient myths, classical music and the human form. He defined this series as "Negative Space Sculpture".
