Merchant (William Moelwyn, 1913-1997). 'Torso', n.d., pink alabaster on alabaster plinth, initials mm to plinth, height 23cm (9ins). Merchant was an academic, novelist, sculptor, poet and Anglican priest. Besides his work as a sculptor, he is best known as Professor of English Literature at Exeter, Canon of Salisbury Cathedral and had many connections with artists including Barbara Hepworth, Ted Hughes, et al.
