(Light browning and spotting on a few of the text leaves.) Contemporary brown calf, spine gilt (small losses at upper and lower spine, rubbed at corners and edges). Provenance: Bremen, Stadt Bibliothek (stamp).

Born in Basel, Matthaeus Merian studied in Zurich and then worked in Strasbourg, Nancy and Paris, before returning to Basel in 1615. The following year he moved to Frankfurt, where he spent most of his working life. With Martin Zeiler, a German geographer, and later with his son, Matthaeus Merian the Younger, he produced a 21-volume series of books known as the Topographia Germaniae. The present volume concerns the region of Flanders and features many of the fine engraved views, maps and plans for which the work is so highly regarded, among which are the maps of Brabant, Limburg, Gelder, Frisia, Luxembourg, Namur and Burgundy, as well as views of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels, Gent and Antwerpen.
