From the early 1970s, the reflective and atmospheric qualities of water had become increasingly interesting to Andrews, and by the later years of that decade it was a subject that formed the main focus of a number of paintings. Watercolour was to prove a perfect means with which to attempt to render these effects, and in the present work, Andrews' mastery of this most fickle of media is clear, the mists, coldness and quiet of a winter day being evoked with a wonderful economy of detail. Painted at Geldeston in Norfolk, to where Andrews had moved in 1977.
