Michiel van Musscher was a student of Adriaen van den Tempel, Gabriel Metsu and Adriaen van Ostade. Like the present work, his genre pieces are reminiscent of Metsu and Frans van Mieris. Paintings in this manner, which most of the time illustrate the social life of Dutch patricians, are very charmful.
