MILLIGA NAPALTJARRI BORN CIRCA 1921 PURURRUNGU 1991 91 by 61 cm Synthetic polymer paint on canvas Bears artist's name 'Milliga', size and Warlayirti Artists catalogue number 426/91 on the reverse Provenance: Painted in 1991 at Wirrimanu (Balgo Hills), for Warlayirti Artists Coo-ee Gallery, Sydney The Sam Barry Collection Exhibited: Coo-ee Gallery, Sydney, 1991 Cf. Wakalpuka, 1992, in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, illustrated in Ryan, J. and K. Akerman, Images of Power: of the Kimberley, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 1993, p.99. This painting is sold with an accompanying certificate from Warlayirti Artists, that reads in part: 'Artist's Country. The painting shows some of the country in which the artist used to live when she was younger. With the other women, she would go out from their camp near this waterhole and look for foods in the neighbouring area...They also collected the branches of trees which they would make into implements that they used. The area is sacred to the artist.'
