Description

Miner Kilbourne Kellogg (American/Ohio, 1814-1889), "Portrait of Mary A. Fiske," oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated 1837 on a period artists card to the verso which notes she was the wife of Jonathan Fiske and was aged 24 when painted, measures 15 x 12 inches and is offered unframed. CONDITION: Good, uneven shiny varnish, would improve with a cleaning. Portrait, figure and miniature painter, Miner Kilbourne Kellogg was born in New York in 1814. In 1818 his family moved to Ohio, and in 1825, they lived briefly in a utopian community at New Harmony, Indiana (1825), where other members encouraged him to sketch. He studied in Cincinnati with Frederick Eckstein's Academy of Fine Arts, and then served apprenticeships with a printer and dry goods operation. In 1837, he received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy and there studied drawing with Robert Weir.
