Item Overview

Description

Miss Traeumerei. 1895.Since the "Taeumerei" ("Dreaming") of the advertised novel's title refers both to the title of Schumann's romantic piano piece and the heroine's penchant for daydreaming, Reed shows her at the piano in a contemplative mood. The flat areas of color in the design as well as the chrysanthemums jutting up diagonally in the foreground reflect the taste for Japanese style that was characteristic of the period. "The Poster" magazine of November, 1898, declared that "artistically refined people are in ecstasies with. . . 'Miss Traemerei,' a charming combination of black, pale cream and yellow" (p. 201).
ETHEL REED (1876-?)
