Notes

Provenance:
From an important private collection, Cairo, Egypt: previously in the collection of Abd-el Ghaffar Shedid a professor of fine arts who worked in both Egypt and Germany.

This striking depiction of the young woman from the Abd-el Rassoul family was painted by the artist in Luxor in the late 1930s. The figure is depicted in local Luxori dress fashionable in the early 1930s. The Abd-el Rassoul family were wealthy, albeit infamous traders of antiquities in the early 20th century.

As well as being one of the early members of La Chimere in the late 1920s, Naghi also formed the 'Atelier Group' whose members worked in Alexandria and Cairo in the early 1950s.
