In 1989 Céline van Balen made a striking series of colour portraits of young islamic girls with a hijab, girls whom encountered on the street in the neighbourhood where she lived. Her large format black and white photographs have the fascinating aura of some 19th Century photographic portraits. In making portraits, Céline van Balen proceeds on the basis of her intuition. She chooses people whom she finds striking, who are unusual. (F. Gierstberg & F. Wildschut, Human Conditions, Intimate Portraits, exh.cat, Rotterdam 1999, p. 030)
