Portrait of daughter Ida. Gum bichromate or silver bromide print, 5 3/4 x4 inches, tipped to the original mount. Circa 1920.

Notes

The subject was the daughter of the photographer and an accomplished photographer in her own career. After the October Revolution, Mosei Nappelbaum began to make portraits of its leaders; and in 1918, one of his photographs of Lenin was chosen as the first official portrait of the leader. During the 1920s and 30s, Nappelbaum continued to work in portraiture. His powerful images, including the acclaimed portrait of the celebrated designer/architect Vladmir Tatlin, furthered his reputation as the most outstanding portrait photographer of the U. S. S. R. Nappelbaum wrote the book on photography from craft to art (1958).
