Description

DESCRIPTION: Newbold Hough Trotter (American, 1827-1898). Jaguar. 1890. Oil on board. Signed, lower left. Titled, dated, and inscribed, verso. In a gold leaf frame. Born in Philadelphia, Trotter began his career in drygoods before becoming interested in the arts. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1858 and then joined the Germantown Home Guards during the Civil War. After the war he opened a hardware business and when that closed he devoted himself to painting. With his significant interest in natural history, he is best known for his depictions of animal subjects. PROVENANCE: From the collection of the grandson of the artist. MEASUREMENTS: 7" x 10". Overall with frame 8-3/4" x 11-3/4". CONDITION: No defects noted.
