Gustaf Axel Schmiterl”w at the age of four, facing left in cream-coloured long-sleeved suit with broad collar, the open white collar of his shirt edged with pleated lace, blue silk sash knotted around his waist, short brown hair signed and dated 'Lafrensen 1799' (lower left) oval, 2 5/8 in. (68 mm.) high, silver-gilt frame, the glazed reverse set with brown and fair locks of hair tied with gold wire and seed-pearls PROVENANCE Augusta Christina Ribbing, n‚e Schmiterl”w (1802-1890), younger sister of the sitter. NOTES Gustaf Axel Schmiterl”w (Gullaskruv/H„lleberga 1795-1855 Gamleby), eldest son of county governor Henning Christian Schmiterl”w and his wife Baroness Anna Maria Palbitzki, studied in Abo in 1810 and later in Uppsala. He was second lieutenant in 1813 and took part in the campaign against Norway in 1814. He became lieutenant in 1819, chamberlain in 1823 and retired from military service in 1824. In 1823 he married Louisa Magdalena Sofia Geijer with whom he had five daughters and a son.
