Item Overview

Description

L'Oeuvre Gravé.

Collection of approximately 400 etchings with engraving, circa 1770-1815. Including approximately 210 proofs before letters, approximately 50 proof etchings, 25 vignettes and head and tail pieces and numerous single sheet etchings. Ex-collection the artist, cited in Portalis/Béraldi ("Ponce avait réuni tout ce qu'il avait gravé, en un recueil in-fol., composé d'épreuves de premier état et d'eaux-fortes," vol. III, p. 339). Each corner or edge mounted onto sheets in a full mottled calf bound volume. With a portrait lithograph of Ponce by Civeton after Motte, 1822. Superb, dark impressions of these scarce proofs.

A nearly exhaustive collection of Ponce's (1746-1831) oeuvre and, thereby, a comprehensive survey of late 18th-century French printmaking. The artist trained in his teens in various Parisian printmaking workshops, collaborated with Cochin on numerous illustration projects and was a close friend and business associate of the Parisian publisher Basan (of the Rembrandt Recueil fame). Ponce's most celebrated prints are his etchings after paintings by the French masters of the 18th-century: Boucher, Baudouin and Fragonard.

This unique collection includes his most famous prints: L'Enlèvement Nocturne, 1780 (P/B 1); La Toilette, 1771 (P/B 2); Les Cerises, 1775 (P/B 3), with 2 impressions, a proof before letters and an eau-forte before the published edition; and Annette et Lubin, 1775 (P/B 4). Various sizes and conditions. Portalis/Béraldi 1 ff. and volume III, pp. 326-39.
